I was obsessed with MS Word art from the early 2000’s. Making visually appealing powerpoint presentations and hand-written posted in school was one of my strengths. In high school I learned about film photography and that intrigue for cameras continued into my early 20s but soon realized I didn’t want to monetize my hobby. Naturally, I’ve always liked being behind the scenes and using computers so I saw the opportunity to take a digital platform I was familiar with and interest into something I can sell from a service perspective. Visual design is a huge umbrella and allows you to flex your creative muscles whilst helping others bring their visions to life.
My favourite part of visual design is when you are able to articulate feelings through graphics and photographs. Put the two disciplines together and you’ve got a recipe for a strong, cohesive concept. Visual decisions will reflect an artist’s unique personalities and a strong sense of identity.
The opportunities in my field that most excite me are within the entertainment industry. I love graphics and typography so much. With my eye for design and a passion for storytelling, I believe that cover art is more important than ever - more often than not, it’s concept merges into merchandise and other visuals. Even though the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” are true, cover art now has only a few seconds to capture someone’s attention and make that visual connection.
